The drivers of sustainable competitive advantage and value-creation in the oil and gas industry have changed fundamentally in the last two decades, presenting firms with a challenging managerial and strategic environment. We will characterize the new value-creation landscape and consider some of its major implications.

Dr. Praveen Kumar<http://www.bauer.uh.edu/directory/profile.asp?firstname=Praveen&lastname=Kumar> is the Cullen Distinguished Chaired Professor, Chairperson of the Finance Department, and Executive Director of the UH Global Energy Management Institute (GEMI) in the C. T. Bauer College of Business at University of Houston. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University and his A.B. and M.P.A. from Princeton University. His research has been widely published in the top journals in finance, economics, and management, and cited in major business publications like Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times. He is the recipient of the University of Houston Excellence Award for Research and Scholarship; the University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award; and the Excellence in Classroom Award at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Kumar has taken a lead role in establishing and developing GEMI at the Bauer College of Business, and has taught and consulted extensively on valuation, project evaluation, and financial strategy in the energy industry.
