The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of the
Chief Technologist has released its second solicitation for Space
Technology Research Fellowships. The Space Technology program is a new
program that supports the development of technologies that can be applied
across NASA mission directorates to revolutionize both human and robotic
space flight. The Space Technology Research Fellowship program is one of
the first programs within Space Technology to release funding solicitations
and is expected to continue to grow in size and funding.

Master’s and Doctoral students pursuing degrees in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines can apply for fellowships
to research high-priority technologies, as identified in the NASA Space
Technology Roadmap, which is summarized at
http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/viewrepositorydocument/cmdocumentid=295844/TABS_NSTRF_FY12.pdf.
Each applicant must identify at least one (and no more than two) Technology
Area Breakdown Structure (TABS) element that is addressed by the research
proposal.

Fellows perform research on their respective campuses and spend time at a
NASA Center and/or non-profit research and development laboratories. Each
student is matched with a researcher in their field who will serve as the
student’s professional advisor. Fellowships can last up to four years,
subject to annual approval, and the second class of students inaugurated
via this solicitation will begin in August 2012.

Total Funding and Award Size: Awards are made in the form of training
grants to the university and may not exceed $66,000 per year for each
student. Applicants are encouraged to work with their advisor and Office
of Sponsored Research to determine the appropriate allocation for their
stipend, faculty advisor allowance, health insurance, and other components
of the award. Total funding for the program is subject to congressional
appropriations for fiscal year (FY) 2012.

*Due Dates:* Applications must be submitted to the NASA NSPIRES website by
January 11, 2012. Detailed submission instructions can be found at
http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/viewrepositorydocument/cmdocumentid=295842/NSTRF12%20Application%20Submission%20Instructions.pdf.

*Eligibility and Limitations:* Eligible students must be pursuing or
seeking to pursue advanced STEM degrees, have completed a Bachelor’s degree
before the fall of 2012, and be enrolled in a full-time Master’s or
Doctoral degree program at an accredited U.S. university in the fall of
2012. They also must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have
completed no more than 24 months of full-time graduate study as of August
1, 2011.
