[CCoE Notice] Migration of UNIX/Linux home directories to new server

To: All College of Engineering users of Engineering UNIX/Linux

Effective September 1, UH Information Technology will discontinue service
on the oldest part of their TSM online backup system. They have installed
a newer, faster system with much greater storage capacity. This change
has very little effect for most TSM users. However, the College's file
server on which the user home directories reside is not supported on the
new TSM system.

To address this issue, Engineering Computing has implemented a new server
for our UNIX/Linux home directories. It replaces the 12-year old legacy
Sun system with a newer, much faster server. Benefits of the new system
include larger quotas (up from 100MB to 500MB per user), and faster
(gigabit) access to campus LAN.

We need to migrate all active Engineering UNIX accounts before September
1. If possible, I would like to do this at a time of your choosing to
minimize possible disruption. However, any user directories not moved by
Monday, August 20, will then be moved without further notice.

To help those users who wish to be migrated by appointment, please provide
the following information:

  1. the user ID of the account(s) to be migrated

and

  2. a time certain when each account will not be logged on to any system or
service.

The entire process takes only a few minutes per account.
