UH Information Technology has sent the following e-mail to us:

University Information Technology has been working closely with your
college's IT staff to upgrade your existing phone installation to the new
Lync Unified Communications service. Your upgrade is scheduled to take
place beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, August 8.

The move to Lync is necessary because:

  * The existing ROLM phone connections are housed in the basement of the
University Center. Demolition of the UC is scheduled to begin October 1st,
and relocating the connections is not a cost effective option.
  * There is a shift in how we communicate. Lync facilitates service
continuity and promotes collaboration by offering traditional phone service
and adding value through screen sharing, video conferencing capabilities,
  instant messaging, and more.
  * UIT is changing the funding model for supporting the campus network
infrastructure and will be eliminating monthly phone bills.

To make the transition to the Lync system as smooth as possible, UIT has
dedicated a team to assist you through the setup process. The steps
  include:

  * Connecting the new phone to your computer
  * Helping you log into the computer client software using your Cougarnet
    credentials
  * Testing the new phone to ensure internal and external calls are
    accepted

The Lync Unified Communications service is a step toward UIT's commitment
to better service and features at much lower costs.

Please remember that this project is not of our of choosing, nor is the
timetable. The entire Engineering Computing staff will be available
throughout this upgrade to help ensure that the transition is as smooth as
possible.
