Improving Safety and Mobility of Transportation Systems - Current Practice and Recent Research

Dr. Praprut Songchitruksa

Texas Transportation Institute

Texas A&M University System

When: 10 -11am, Friday, November 19, 2010

Where: Room 102D, Engr. Bldg 1

Abstract:

With the increasing coverage of intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure, there is a growing flow of data available from the sensors that are currently being used to monitor and operate the transportation systems. Many of these data are available in real time and some are being archived on a regular basis. Significant research efforts have been put forth to find ways to intelligently utilize these data to improve the safety and operational performance of such systems. The first part of the talk will provide a background on the basic components of transportation systems and will touch upon basic principles of traffic operations. Traffic operations rely on the data retrieved from the sensors in order to provide detection and control decisions in signalized applications or performance monitoring such as freeway management. The second part will provide an overview of several research projects which share a common goal towards safer and more efficient transportation system.

Short Bio:

Dr. Songchitruksa is an Associate Research Engineer with the TransLink Research Center at the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI). He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 2004. He joined TTI in 2005 after serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University at Kingsville (TAMUK). His areas of expertise are traffic operation and transportation modeling. The common thread across his research is the integrated and innovative use of new technologies and advanced data analytics to enhance safety and mobility of the transportation system and to provide greater insight into complex interactions among system elements. He has actively involved with several Transportation Research Board committees. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas and also a licensed civil engineer in Thailand.
