"The Civil Engineering of Cancer

Nanomedicine"

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

11:30 a.m. Refreshments,

12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Seminar

Room 102D Engineering Building 1, UH

Abstract

This may be surprising to some, but here are some keywords in contemporary cancer therapeutics: Structural design, mechanics of materials, flow through porous media, waste management, transport, fluid-solid interactions.... terminologies that are more often found in civil engineering parlance than oncology textbooks. The connectors are nanotechnology and nanomedicine. Thus the title, and the contents of the lecture, in a nanoshell.

Dr. Mauro Ferrari serves as President, CEO and Director of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, Professor of Experimental Therapeutics at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Professor of Bioengineering Rice University, and President The Alliance for NanoHealth. Ferrari is a founder of biomedical nano/micro-technology, especially in their applications to drug delivery, cell transplantation, implantable bioreactors, and other innovative therapeutic modalities. In these fields, he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and 6 books. He was the Special Expert on Nanontechnology and Eminent Scholar at the National Cancer Institute from 2003-2005 where he developed the world's largest Nanotechnology program. He holds more than 30 US and International patents with approximately 30 more pending.
