ABSTRACT

Lubrication is important for efficient operation of industrial machinery. Rotary and reciprocating elastomeric seals help in providing lubrication between the moving parts in these machines. An improvement in the seal design may help in obtaining better lubrication with minimum lubricant oil leakage. To understand the mechanism of lubricant film formation, a numerical simulation can be used as a design tool.



This thesis has mainly focused on simulating elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) for low elastic modulus materials in two and three dimensions. This problem is a fluid structure interface problem in which elastic and hydrodynamic models are formulated, and a solution of the coupled elastohydrodynamic problem is obtained using two different iteration methods: the Newton method and the Relaxation method. Results from both the methods are compared in terms of computation time and robustness. The thesis also includes analysis of a three dimensional study of a seal using the Newton iteration method.
