Provost's Undergraduate Research Scholarship (PURS) - Deadline Friday, November 15
The Office of Undergraduate Research is now accepting applications for the Provost's Undergraduate Research Scholarship (PURS) program for spring 2014. The deadline is Friday, November 15th.  All full-time juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA, who have not previously participated in the PURS program, are eligible to apply. The PURS is a part-time, mentored research opportunity which awards a $1000 scholarship for the spring 2014 semester. Nationally Competitive Scholarships:

Barry Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to outstanding sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing a research career in science, math or engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Regarding eligibility, candidates must be full-time sophomores or juniors at the time of application, be a U.S. citizen, natural or resident alien, and typically have at least a 3.7 gpa. Strong candidates should have at least 3 months of prior research experience. Candidates must be nominated by UH and may not apply directly. Each university may nominate only 4 students per year. The UH Goldwater application deadline is December 2, 2013, and the national deadline is January 31, 2014. Harry S. Truman Scholarship
The Truman awards up to $30,000 scholarships to students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service. The Truman Foundation defines public service as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service oriented nonprofit organizations. Applicants must be full-time juniors intending to graduate in the 2014-2015 academic year and be U.S. citizens or naturals. Applicants should have a strong academic and leadership record and have public service related experiences and goals.  Candidates must be nominated by UH and may not apply directly. Each university may nominate only 4 students per year. The UH campus deadline is December 2, 2013, and the national deadline is February 4, 2014. Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Graduate Arts Award enables graduating seniors and recent alumni with exceptional artistic, creative promise, and significant financial need to pursue up to three years of graduate study in the U.S. or abroad. The program awards up to $50,000 annually, and approximately 20 recipients will be awarded in 2014.  Applicants must be graduating seniors or recent graduates from UH; have at least a 3.2 gpa; have unmet financial need; and start a graduate degree program in the fall of 2014 in the performing arts, visual arts, or creative writing . There are two phases to the application process. The deadline for Phase One is November 26, 2013. If you are selected to submit an application for Phase Two, your application will require university nomination. The deadline for Phase Two is February 25, 2014.
