Good Morning All,
UH SPE Student Paper Contest Deadline Approaching!
Let me remind our students and faculty that the UH student paper contest will be held on Saturday February 23, 2019 to select the candidates who will represent us at the Regional SPC.
The title and abstract is due by this Friday, Feb 15, 2019. If you were thinking about it, don’t procrastinate – you can still get in!

What is the student paper contest? The initial (local) competition is really a presentation only, and not a paper. The judges will hear your talk (typically about 15 or 20 min), pose a few questions about your topic, and judge you based on presentation, technical merit, etc. It is a great way to hone your presentation skills, and potentially win a cash prize.
So why is it called a “Paper Contest”? The winners go on to compete at the Annual SPE meeting (typically in October), which is an international event, and a technical paper is required at that time.
Can I submit a group project? No, unfortunately, since only one person can present, only one can be the author and presenter.
Can I submit to both the SPE SPC and the SPWLA SPC as well? Yes, you sure can and the topic and talk can be the same.
Do I need a full paper to compete? Not at this time; they only need a title and brief abstract. The selected candidates will compete at the Regional SPC (held at UH this year on April 6) and if they win, THEN they need to submit to compete at the International SPC (usually in October).
Can someone who graduated last year still compete? Yes, provided it is within 1 year of graduation.
