An NSM Faculty Development Workshop is scheduled for Friday, November 16, from Noon – 1:15 pm in Garrison Gym, Room 205. Lunch will be provided; please arrive a few minutes early. Please RSVP by Nov 14 using the link below. A flyer is attached.
Topic: “Two Approaches to Introductory Biology: Inquiry Labs and the Freshman Research Initiative”

Dr. Marty Maas
Assistant Professor of Instruction

Dr. Lauren DePue
Assistant Professor of Practice
University of Texas at Austin
Freshman students at the University of Texas participate in either inquiry-based classroom Introductory Biology labs or opt into the Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) to meet their lab requirements. Both programs aim to improve student engagement in science and to build research skills. Dr. Maas will discuss current curriculum for the class labs and Dr. DePue will discuss the FRI which matches over 900 students to research projects every year. Logistics of managing these programs will be discussed.
