[CCoE Notice] Fall 2016 Best Dissertation Nomination

Dear Department Chairs and Program Directors,

The Cullen College of Engineering Best Dissertation Award nominations are due soon.  Dean Tedesco recommends that all PhD candidates from a department must apply for the Best Dissertation Award.  Each department/program must select one nominee.  The nomination procedure is pretty straightforward.  The award for best dissertation is $1,000 plus the bragging rights.

The deadline for PhD candidates to submit their nominations (to their Department Graduate Advisor) for the Best Dissertation Award for Fall 2016 is Friday, November 4th. The departments must form a committee to select the best dissertation and forward their selected (only one) nominee to the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs by Wednesday, 9th. BEST DISSERTATION AWARD
CULLEN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

DESCRIPTION
This award will be given once in the fall (includes summer graduates) and once in the spring. The recipient receives an honorarium of $1,000.

ELIGIBILITY
Students who will have been awarded the Ph. D. at fall (includes summer graduates) or spring graduation of the year they successfully defended and submitted their dissertation.

NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Each Department may nominate one student. The nomination is due by 5 pm November 4th. Submission of the application packet as one file in pdf format is electronic via email to your department graduate program adviser.  The file should be titled “BestDissertation_TermYr_Lastname_FirstName”.

The electronic submission needs to include in the following order:
1.    Nomination form<https://www.egr.uh.edu/sites/ccoe.egr.uh.edu/files/files/BestDissertationNominationForm.pdf>
2.    Brief (3-page) CV specifically listing
·         Education and employment history
·         Honors and publications
3.    Nominating letter from the Department Chair/Program Director. The letter should comment on:

 *   The candidate pool and selection process within the Department/Program
 *   The originality and importance of the research
 *   Other excellence indicators, e.g., inventions, patents, job offers
4.    A letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor (max 2 pages long, single-spaced, font size 12, 1-inch margins) emphasizing the

 *   The potential for significant contribution to the field
 *   The nominee’s comparative publication record and the quality of the journals
5.    Dissertation abstract and pdf of the papers published and submitted for journal publications (the Award Committee may request to see the entire dissertation)
6.    A double-spaced lay person summary of up to one page, including a section on the significance of the research, for use in College communications and media announcements.

SELECTION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS

The winner will be chosen by a faculty committee appointed by the Dean for this purpose in consultation with the Associate Dean for Graduate Students and the Associate Dean for Research. Selection will be based on the originality and importance of the research, and the potential for the student to make a significant contribution to the discipline. The Award will be announced via College communications on or before University graduation ceremonies in December and May for fall (includes summer) and spring terms, respectively.
