Dear investigators,
We are pleased to share with you some recent updates from the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. We are continually working to find ways of improving our services to the UH research community, so we hope to communicate with you often.
Below, you’ll find that we now have office hours specifically for student researchers. Please consider having your students come by during these hours to learn more about the processes surrounding human subjects research. Due to the special time constraints of student theses and dissertations, we understand the need for timely and efficient review of these projects; speaking with a CPHS coordinator prior to submission often ensures a smoother process and quicker turnaround time. It would also be a great learning opportunity for them, as early career researchers.

CPHS Office Hours Now Open to Students!
Open office hours for students are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9a.m. – 12p.m. in
E. Cullen Room 403.
During these hours, your students can:
• Ask any questions they might have about the CPHS submission and review process
• Drop by to discuss human subjects issues related to their specific projects
• Request a pre-review of their protocol prior to submitting it to the CPHS office to
make the process smoother and the turnaround time faster
• Bring their laptop and work in RAMP with real-time guidance from CPHS staff
Please post this flier<http://uh.edu/research/news/email/compliance/orpcc-studentofficehours.pdf> in your work areas and labs to inform students of this opportunity.
Change in Policy
Will a student conducting thesis/dissertation research be engaged in your CPHS-approved human subjects protocol?
In many cases, if aims and instruments align, this student may be added to your approved protocol and does not have to have a protocol of their own.
For Research Methods Course Instructors:
· CPHS staff are available as guest presenters in research methods courses. Our one-hour presentation is designed to provide basic human subjects ethics instruction to students.
· Questions on the CPHS application and descriptions of the review process (including timing recommendations) are also included.
· Please contact us if you are interested in a presenter coming to your class.
Coming soon: CPHS 3
· All protocols with student PIs will be routed to a newly established CPHS 3 starting in Fall 2016. More information will be provided when this committee is established.
· The CPHS Office is currently recruiting faculty and student members to serve on this committee. Contact the CPHS office for details.
