To all Engineering Students,

Would you like to be a mentor to a fellow engineering student or have someone mentor you? Someone to give you advice about what classes or what professors to take, studying techniques, networking tips, to have all your questions answered? Or, how about you help a transfer or incoming student adapt to the new college experience and have a smooth transition? PAC (PROMES Action Committee) is allowing students to be involved in this beneficial program to all engineering students. To form part of it, as a mentor or mentee/protégé, you do not have to be part of PROMES; all engineering majors are welcome. All you need is to be open to receive help from someone who has been through your shoes already or be willing to help someone who is struggling with their engineering coursework.

For those who are not fully aware of it, the mentorship program is basically to help and benefit students to have someone to look up to in case they have any questions, need help with assignments/classes, recommend teachers or classes to take, simply have someone to guide them through their first years in college. As part of this, PAC along with other engineering organizations have various events and study night throughout the semester so mentors and mentees can meet.

Regarding the time commitment for mentors/mentees, they need to meet face to face twice a month, or as much as possible, depending on the schedule of the mentor and mentee. Our goal is to maintain a close, consistent, and friendly relationship among the mentor and mentee. I am aware many of the mentors have busy schedules, so based on their time, they can keep in contact by email, text, Facebook, or any social network available. Mentors can check on their mentee regularly by sending them emails on how they are doing academically, what they think of their classes, any upcoming exams, how’s college life, etc., just keep in touch. Also, in order to keep track of meetings between students, please send a selfie every time you two meet to the program coordinator (Rosie Ortiz) at rmortiz at uh.edu<mailto:rmortiz at uh.edu>. There will be monthly socials, study nights, and outreach events so mentors/mentees will be able to meet. These will be scheduled by student organizations within the Cullen College of Engineering.

The Mentorship Kick-off will be on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:30 at the Pit (Engineering Building 1 Commons). We will be having a game night filled with competitions among mentors and mentees, board games, free food and drinks, and music. We will be having Olympic competitions between mentor/mentee pairs such as three-legged race, jumbo Jenga, twister, monopoly, etc. This event is mainly for mentors and mentees to network and for those who plan to participate in the program.
