[CCoE Notice] FW: Electrical system disruptions planned during winter break

Good afternoon,

Based on this announcement regarding power disruptions during the winter break, it is advisable to turn off all computers and electronics in your labs and offices before leaving for the break. If you plan to remotely connect to computers in Engineering Building 1 and 2 during the break, please make plans with me ahead of time to put settings in place so I can attempt to turn on/off your computers remotely. There's no guarantee of complete success since power disruptions may also affect networking equipment (which in turn will affect my ability to communicate with computers on the network), but I will give it a good effort.

I will follow up with another reminder after finals are finished, and a final reminder before the winter break. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns until then.

Sincerely,

Kiet Luong

Campus Community,

In order to provide consistent and reliable electrical service on campus and to avoid future failures of the campus electrical system, pre-investigative and repair maintenance efforts are needed.

Please be advised that the University's plan to perform a complete campus electrical shut-down has been canceled during the winter break until further notice.

However, brief electrical disruptions will take place over the break. These are scheduled to occur between Dec. 26 and Dec. 30. For a list of buildings that will be impacted by the electrical disruptions, or power blips, click here<http://uhhelpdesk.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvNE~wrTDv8S~xb~Gv9a~yLlHf0q04D78N9ifz7~Pv_r&2=14555>.

Building backup generators will be online during the electrical blips, which will occur as systems are transferred to generator power. Once the work is completed, blips will occur as the campus electrical feeders are realigned and balanced. Impacts will be to intermediate distribution frame (IDF) equipment, computers, lab research equipment and any instrument that is not on an uninterrupted power supply (UPS).

Please make all necessary arrangements to protect equipment during these power disruptions. One suggestion is that if you have any equipment you feel will be sensitive to the power blips, take precautions if your work/research allows by turning off the equipment beforehand and turning it back on once power is restored.

The intent is not to disrupt research or teaching efforts. However, if any department determines that the scheduled power blips will be problematic and unacceptable, they should reach out so that efforts can be made to accommodate their needs.

In the unlikely event an unforeseen circumstance arises and it is determined that additional steps need to be implemented to ensure campus electrical systems remain intact, the UH Physical Recovery Building Priority and Power Restoration Protocol will be implemented.

Principal Project Manager Shannon Jones is leading the electrical outage and can be contacted at 301-412-3182 or sejones3 at central.uh.edu<mailto:sejones3 at central.uh.edu>. If additional support is required as far as any experiments or ongoing research, contact Facilities Management Executive Director Herman Taitt at 504-444-3294 or taitt at uh.edu<mailto:taitt at uh.edu>.

For assistance during the electrical disruptions, contact the Facilities Service Center at 713-743-4948.
