Dear National Academy Colleague:****
****
I call to your attention the formation of the Texas A&M University
Institute for Advanced Study <http://tias.tamu.edu/> (TIAS) as ****
described in the attached press release. TIAS represents an important
structural change for the University ****
and is unique among public universities. TIAS is designed to provide
exceptional sabbatical appointment
opportunities for senior colleagues who are interested in collaborating
with the Texas A&M Faculty on
research and advanced studies. In residence appointments with durations of
three to twelve months will
be the usual and preferred pattern. Funds are in place to support
salaries and travel for ten TIAS Faculty
Fellows/yr, as well as to support fellowships for twenty PhD graduate
students/yr to pursue research of
interest to the TIAS Faculty Fellows and their faculty collaborators. The
scope of the institute is broad, ****
Fellows can be nominated by any of the ten Colleges of the University.****
****
The first class of ten TIAS Faculty Fellows will initiate their
in-residence appointments during the academic ****
year beginning September, 2012. The TIAS Faculty Fellows are nominated by
an Electorate of Texas A&M
faculty consisting of 70 distinguished professors holding
national/international recognitions such as national
academy membership, Nobel Prize, Wolf Prize, Fields Medal, and/or analogous
distinctions representing ****
the social sciences, humanities, public policy, architecture, and other
disciplines. The decisions on selections
will be made annually by an Advisory Board elected by the Electorate. The
funding is in place for a five year
startup of TIAS. A capital campaign will secure a substantial endowment to
stabilize TIAS following the five
year startup and enable appointment of about 25 TIAS Faculty Fellows per
year thereafter. ****
****
I have been appointed the founding Director of TIAS and I chair the
Advisory Board. I may soon have
occasion to have discussions with you with regard to TIAS and the Fellow
selection process. ****
** **
I invite you to visit our web site at http://tias.tamu.edu/ and I also
encourage you to circulate the attached
press release as you feel appropriate. I would be pleased to respond to
any questions with regard to TIAS.****
****
With best regards,****
****
****
