The *University of Houston* and *Rice University* rank among the top 75
universities in the country for engineering research and development
expenditures.****

** **

According to a database using *National Science Foundation* figures for
2009, the most recent data available, UH spent $34.4 million to rank No. 69,
while Rice spent $33.2 million on engineering R&D to rank No. 72.****

Breaking the numbers down further, Rice ranked 19th in the country for
bioengineering and biomedical engineering R&D, at $10.4 million.****

** **

UH saw its highest ranking in chemical engineering R&D spending, ranking No.
17 nationwide with expenditures in that category of just over $11 million.**

The data was compiled by Wichita Business Journal, an affiliate publication
of *Houston Business Journal*.****

U.S. colleges and universities spent about $54.9 billion on total R&D in
2009, up from $51.9 billion a year earlier.****
