Hello Everyone:
Many of you may not know, but the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) - Houston Professional chapter has an active link of the Order of the Engineer. What is the Order of the Engineer? Here is a brief description of the Order:
* The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.
* The first ceremony was held on June 4, 1970 at Cleveland State University. Others like it have since spread across the United States at which graduate and registered engineers are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and to wear a stainless steel ring. The ceremonies are conducted by Links (local sections) of the Order.
* The Obligation likewise, contains parts of the Canon of Ethics of major engineering societies. Initiates, as they accept it voluntarily, pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth's precious wealth.
* This is extremely important: The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order does foster a unity of purpose and the honoring of one's pledge lifelong.
* For those of you that may know of the Canadian version, the Obligation of the Order of the Engineer is similar to the Canadian "Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer" initiated there in 1926. It uses a wrought iron ring, conducts a secret ceremony, and administers an oath authorized by Rudyard Kipling. The extension of the Ritual outside Canada was prevented by copyright and other conflicting factors.
* What is an Engineer's Ring?
o The Engineer's Ring in the United States is a stainless steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand by engineers who have accepted the Obligation of an Engineer in a Ring Ceremony.
* Who can participate in an Engineer's Ring Ceremony?
o Any engineer is eligible for induction if he or she has graduated from an ABET-accredited engineering program or holds a license as a Professional Engineer. Students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering degree programs are eligible if they are within two academic terms of graduating. Other candidates may be considered eligible because of equivalent credentials, subject to the approval of the National Board of Governors. Anyone may witness the induction ceremony. Families are invited as guests.
This gives you an idea of how the Order began and how it's continued today. The acceptance of the Obligation of the Engineer and the placing of the engineering ring usually occurs right before you graduate from college; however, there are still many universities that don't have registered links. Due to this fact, SHPE-Houston decided to become a registered link and induct our members, members of the Houston engineering community, graduating seniors at Rice, UH, and Lamar University.
We're proud to bring this to our membership and general engineering community!
Therefore, we're happy to announce that we will be hosting the next induction ceremony on Friday, December 17th on the University of Houston Campus at 3:00 pm in the Engineering Lecture Hall (L2D2 - map<http://www.uh.edu/maps/buildings/D2>).
