Greetings!

Over the past year we have made tremendous progress toward our Tier One
goals. Enrollment is up and college research expenditures hit a new high
of $21.8 million for fiscal year 2009. These milestones are the result
of your hard work and continued dedication to the UH Cullen College of
Engineering. Great job!

As we continue to make progress, I will send updates to keep you
informed. Here are a few announcements related to our Tier One
initiatives:

Honors Program: This fall, the Cullen College of Engineering will be
launching an honors program for engineering students. A joint endeavor
with The Honors College, this new program will give top engineering
students additional opportunities to take more challenging courses and
pursue undergraduate research. Establishing an honors program is
expected to be a recruiting tool for attracting high-quality students
into our programs. Dave Shattuck, associate dean for undergraduate
programs, is directing this effort.

Biomedical Chair: In January, Metin Akay joined the college as the
founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Previously,
he served as professor and interim chair at Arizona State University's
Harrington Department of Bioengineering. He is an internationally-known
researcher in the areas of neural and cardiovascular engineering,
informatics and imaging. Please join me in welcoming Metin to UH.

NCALM: The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping has relocated to
UH from the University of Florida. Ramesh Shrestha and his team will be
operating the NSF-funded center tentatively from SERCC and will be
moving to the UH Energy Research Park once the renovation is complete.
We are very excited to have this prestigious center at the University of
Houston. Read more about this center at:

ELB: The Engineering Leadership Board will be convening on April 30 to
review our Tier One progress. We have developed strategic initiative
groups to work on important metrics involving recruitment, academic and
research programs, research and industrial partnerships and advancement.
We will be looking to step up the pace on the implementation of these
very important initiatives.

External Relations: Last month, Lisa Robertson joined the college as
executive director of external relations and strategic partnerships.
Previously, she served as chief of staff for the provost at Texas A&M
University. She will be working with the Engineering Leadership Board as
well as initiative leaders in the college to successfully implement our
strategic plan. In addition, she is tasked with establishing strategic
partnerships with industry to support our academic and research
programs. Join me in welcoming Lisa to the Cullen College.

Budget: As you are well aware, the state of Texas has cut its budget.
The Cullen College of Engineering has been requested by the provost to
prepare for these budget cuts. We have worked diligently to minimize the
impact these cuts will have on the college and to make sure they will
not be detrimental to our Tier One aspirations. We will have an update
on budgetary issues next month.

Again, thank you for all your hard work and support for the UH Cullen
College of Engineering!

Warm regards,

Joe Tedesco
