Hello everyone,

Professor Hubing from Clemson University will visit UH tomorrow. He will
give a seminar at 10:30 am at E321 Engineering Building II in the
morning. The abstract of his talk and bio is attached. If you are
driving a Toyota/Lexus, you shall try to attend J.

Title: Does Electromagnetic Interference Cause Sudden Acceleration in
Automobiles?

Abstract: The introduction of electronics has allowed manufacturers to
build cars and trucks that are safer than they have ever been before.
However, all electronic devices have some level of susceptibility to
electromagnetic interference (EMI); and recent events have caused a
number of researchers to speculate that EMI may be responsible for cases
of unintended acceleration that have resulted in death or serious
injury. This presentation reviews the systems in modern automobiles that
are capable of actuating the throttle and brakes and discusses potential
vulnerabilities of these systems to EMI. The reliable operation of
highly integrated electronic systems requires complete and unambiguous
information regarding the operation of every subsystem. With a proper
design methodology, it will one day be possible to ensure that the
electronics that make automobiles safer are never responsible for
creating an unsafe driving situation.

Thanks.
