Everyone, Joshua Bird is giving another class soon. He is partnering with NSBE. If you are a NASBE member the $32 dollar required workbook for the classes cost you only your membership in NSBE. See the details below. This is a great opportunity, and I highly recommend this course. It will help you learn how not to get into debt and how to control your finances.

Subject: Foundations In Personal Finance: Learn How Money Really Works

Mr. Matthews,

Below is an email about this upcoming Foundations class. Could we get this out to the PROMES Listserv and maybe also through the Engineering Communications Listerv? Let me know! Thanks!

---------------------------------------

I am excited to offer this class this semester and to be partnering with a great organization like NSBE. Why should you care about personal finance right now? Shouldn't you focus on school and worry about money once you get that degree, land that job, and start banking checks like you own Nike? Well that would be right if we lived in a perfect world, but as you may know this world isn't perfect. So lets break it down.

Why Does Personal Finance Matter Now?

Turn on the TV, open up Facebook and Instagram, or turn on a music video and what do you see? More often than not it is people buying things they can't afford with money they don't have to impress people they don't really like. It's all about flashing the shiny stuff to make sure everyone knows you got it going on. There is something else though; something much more subtle. The American culture is the most marketed to culture in the history of mankind. Credit card commercials make us think we are sophisticated and "rich" if we have the new Black card. Music idols teach us that spending money on consumer items is what rich and wealthy people do. And unfortunately this has had a devastating effect on young adults. College students are the number 1 targets for credit card companies because you are less likely to pay the money back and therefore generate more income for them in interest payments. More students are dropping out of college today because of financial troubles than they are because of academic problems and student loan levels have hit the TRILLION dollar mark. Whats worse is when these young adults realize that it was all a myth it will have already wreaked havoc on their lives.

The Solution

But how can we blame anyone for falling for the marketing? We as a society never educate anyone on how to handle money or the problems with debt. We left that up to the banks which (surprise, surprise) don't do what they do for the consumer's best interest. Well I am doing my part to change that. Foundations in Personal Finance will teach you everything you need to know about money. We talk about everything from debt to budgeting to saving and investing to buying a home, building wealth, and best of all, giving generously. We will lay out a simple 7 step plan that works for anyone's situation that will get you out of debt and get you on the road to becoming wealthy and free of financial stress. It has already helped literally millions of people across America reach their goals so there is no reason it can't work for you. The class is 5, three hour classes that will be taught on Saturday mornings starting September 27th and going every other saturday until November 22nd from 9AM to 12PM. The cost of the class is only the book which is currently $32.99 plus shipping, but if you join NSBE for only $10 for the year you will receive the book (and therefore the class) for FREE which puts you in the positive $22.99! Now that is what I call a smart financial decision.
