To: members at shpehouston.org<mailto:members at shpehouston.org>

Hello Everyone:

Many of you may not know, but the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) - Houston Professional chapter has an active link of the Order of the Engineer. What is the Order of the Engineer? Here is a brief description of the Order:

* The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.

* The Obligation likewise, contains parts of the Canon of Ethics of major engineering societies. Initiates, as they accept it voluntarily, pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth's precious wealth.

* This is extremely important: The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order does foster a unity of purpose and the honoring of one's pledge lifelong.

* What is an Engineer's Ring?
o The Engineer's Ring in the United States is a stainless steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand by engineers who have accepted the Obligation of an Engineer in a Ring Ceremony.

* Who can participate in an Engineer's Ring Ceremony?
o Any engineer is eligible for induction if he or she has graduated from an ABET-accredited engineering program or holds a license as a Professional Engineer. Students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering degree programs are eligible if they are within two academic terms of graduating. Other candidates may be considered eligible because of equivalent credentials, subject to the approval of the National Board of Governors. Anyone may witness the induction ceremony. Families are invited as guests.

The acceptance of the Obligation of the Engineer and the placing of the engineering ring usually occurs right before you graduate from college; however, there are still many universities that don't have registered links. Due to this fact, SHPE-Houston decided to become a registered link and induct our members, members of the Houston engineering community, graduating seniors at Rice, UH, Prairie View A&M, and Texas A&M and Lamar University.

Therefore, we're happy to announce that we will be hosting the next induction ceremony on Saturday, May 4th on the University of Houston Campus at 2:00 pm in Engineering Lecture Hall (D2) (map<http://www.uh.edu/maps/buildings/?short_name=D2>).

How can I be included in the ceremony?

If you're interested in being inducted on May 4th, you can sign up using the following method:

* Fill out the form on the SHPE-Houston website: http://www.shpehouston.org/Pages/OOE.htm

 * Use the PDF document attached to this email to determine the ring size you will require. Remember, this ring will go on the pinky finder of your working hand, so make sure you provide the size for this finger.

 * The cost to participate in this event is $15, which covers the cost of the ring and the certificate given at the ceremony. Send $15 via PayPal to the following email address: OOE at shpehouston.org<mailto:OOE at shpehouston.org>
 * Information and fee must be received NO LATER THAN Monday, April 22nd ! No rings will be ordered without payment.
 * If you're a graduating senior, we'll need proof that you're graduating in May or December 2013. This can include a transcript, letter from advisor, or other documentation showing expected graduation date.
 * **NOTE: If you feel uncomfortable sending your payment via PayPal, please contact me at OOE at shpehouston.org<mailto:OOE at shpehouston.org> to make arrangements to send payment via mail.

SHPE-Houston will also be available to take ring sizes and payment for the rings on the following days and locations:

*         March 28, 2013 - SHPE-UH General Meeting - 7:00 pm - UH Campus - L2D2

If you have questions regarding this event and/or are interested in becoming a member, please feel free to email me at OOE at shpehouston.org<mailto:OOE at shpehouston.org>.

Most importantly, if you have engineering friends that are interested in becoming a member of the Order of the Engineer, please ask them to send me the above information. I've attached a flyer that you can use to post at your work place/university. In addition, all this information can be found on the SHPE-Houston website http://www.shpehouston.org/Pages/OOE.htm. All engineers are welcome!

Sincerely,

*******************************************
