The time has come for our annual spring UH PROMES philanthropy project, and I hope you will help us to make this year's event the best ever.  We will once again be hosting the UH AFSP Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to raise awareness about depression and suicide here at the University of Houston.

You may know that I lost my 24-year old son, Jimmy, to suicide in 2006.


*         I WALK because I don't want Jimmy's death to be in vain.

*         I WALK  because he didn't know that there was help available for the way he was feeling.  I want you to know how to get help for yourself or a friend or loved one.

*         I WALK because I want you to know how to spot the symptoms of depression in yourself and your friends.  The UH CAPS Team will be at the walk to help with that.

*         I WALK because every 13.7 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide, and that is simply not acceptable!

*         I WALK because for people ages 15-24, the suicide rate is 10.5%.  That is tragic and we need to change that.

*         I WALK - and I hope you will walk with me.


If you can volunteer to help with this event, please register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CampusWalk2013 and let me know how you want to be involved.  It's a great community service activity.  You even get a free AFSP Campus Walk volunteer t-shirt if you register this week!

Also, I hope you will officially register at the AFSP website as a walk participant and form a walk team with your friends or student organization (or join my TEAM PROMES and walk with me), and do what you can to raise funds through your walking.  You can do that through this website:
