and Substantive Interaction</span></a></span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:12pt"> (RSI) regulations to ensure our asynchronous online courses remain designated as online (not correspondence) and our federal funding
is not affected. I am writing to solicit your help, and to update you on the efforts regarding RSI during the 2021-22 academic year.</span></p>

<span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:12pt">The Office of the Provost communicated these regulations to Fall 2021 instructors of online courses in July 2021, and to Spring 2022 instructors of asynchronous online courses
in November of 2021.</span><span style="margin:0px; font-size:12pt; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif"> Subsequently</span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; color:black; font-size:12pt">, the Online and Special Programs
office sent a survey to instructors of asynchronous online courses to complete and acknowledge their understanding of the regulations. Instructors were also given access to a resource page and training information (</span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:"Segoe UI",sans-serif; color:black"><a href="https://uh.edu/power-on/rsi/" data-auth="NotApplicable" style="margin:0px"><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; color:rgb(5,99,193); font-size:12pt">https://uh.edu/power-on/rsi/</span></a></span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; color:black; font-size:12pt">).
This information was emailed weekly through March 2022, and instructors stopped receiving the information once they completed the survey. During this time, our central Instructional Design team provided virtual training sessions, and those will continue in
June. </span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,sans-serif; color:black"><b><span style="margin:0px; background-color:white; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:12pt">Only 50% of instructors have responded to the survey. </span></b></span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; color:black; font-size:12pt">In
addition to the survey, we have conducted baseline reviews of syllabi and course shells for 600+ asynchronous online courses for spring 2022 to assess the level of interaction between the instructor and the students. Six components of the RSI were measured.
Courses that satisfied fewer than 4 components were flagged for further review, and an email was sent to the instructor and their department chair. </span><span style="margin:0px; font-family:Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif; color:black; font-size:12pt"><b>We
need your help encouraging faculty to complete the survey, and to meet all 6 components of the RSI regulations in their online asynchronous courses.</b></span></p>
