<b><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#1F497D">Abstract: </span>
</b><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#1F497D">Transition metal oxides and chalcogenides containing heavy elements often possess large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and strong electron interactions due to the high atomic numbers and compact d-orbitals.
The interplay of SOC and electron correlation is a key ingredient for a variety of novel topological electronic and magnetic ground states. In this talk, I will present our recent experimental work on two representative material systems, namely iridates and
layered metal chalcogenides which exhibit a broad spectrum of intriguing physical properties. For the iridates, I will focus on the pyrochlore compounds which are predicted to host exotic topological states such as magnetic Weyl semimetals. I will discuss
how we synthesized the bulk crystals and thin films, followed by a more detailed discussion of their unusual magnetic and transport properties arising from the competition and interplay of SOC and electron interactions. For the layered metal chalcogenides,
I will discuss the controlled growth of two-dimensional nanoplates and thin films by chemical vapor deposition and the engineering of their physical properties by tuning the stoichiometry, thickness and strain.
