<p class="MsoNormal">Dear Cullen College faculty, staff and students,<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">It is my great pleasure to announce that Dr. Jerrod A. Henderson,
instructional assistant professor in the Cullen College’s First Year Experience
program since 2016, has been named the director of the Program for Mastery in
Engineering Studies (PROMES) as of June 1.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jerrod arrived at UH after spending six years as a chemical
engineering faculty member at the University of Illinois. Whether through the
development of outreach programs, directing summer REUs, or innovative
teaching, Jerrod has dedicated his career to increasing the number of students
who are in the pipeline to pursue STEM careers.. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jerrod is a co-founder of the St. Elmo Brady STEM Academy
(SEBA), an educational intervention aimed at exposing underrepresented 4<sup>th</sup>
and 5<sup>th</sup> grade boys to hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activities. SEBA
accomplishes its goals through an innovative educational curriculum and by
engaging students’ fathers and/or male mentors who learn STEM alongside them.
For his work, Jerrod has been recognized by the local news, community
organizations and, most recently, by the Illinois campus as the recipient of the Chancellor’s
Award for Excellence in Public Engagement.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jerrod earned degrees in chemistry and chemical Engineering
at Morehouse College and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State
University. He completed his Ph.D. in chemical & biomolecular engineering
in 2010 at the University of Illinois. Serving as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar in
college, Jerrod had the opportunity to intern at NASA Langley. He also earned
distinction as a NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Graduate Fellow, Phi Beta Kappa member
and an American Chemical Society Scholar. His research interests are in
engineering identity formation and persistence among underrepresented students,
especially African American males. He also looks forward to partnering with UH
faculty to develop innovative outreach components for their proposals. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">With his unique and extensive experience in encouraging
diverse students to excel in STEM fields, Jerrod will bring new knowledge and
