The same could happen again. You only have to look at the moon to see the multitude of large meteor/asteroid strikes over time. There have also been recent well documented near misses of large asteroids passing close to earth. Today we have the technology to detect Asteroids and large meteors but we have not implemented the best technology for detecting them. The latest large meteor strike in Russia on Feb 15, 2013 was a total surprise and undetected until it hit. </span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1.5em; padding: 0px; line-height: 18px; font-size: 12px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular; text-align: left; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); "><span style="font-family: verdana, geneva; ">Former Houston NASA astronauts <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusty_Schweickart" style="word-wrap: break-word;">Rusty Schweickart</a> (MIT Alum) and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Lu" style="word-wrap: break-word;">Ed Lu</a>, who are founders of the B612 organization dedicated to detecting asteroids, will talk about the state of the art of detecting asteroids and large meteors on a collision course with earth and what more that should be done. The Sentinel Satellite that they are proposing would be a significant step in mankind's ability to detect asteroids at an early stage such that there would be time to develop defensive strategies. Less than 1% of the over one million asteroids greater than 40 meters have been identified to date. The Sentinel mission will discover the other 99% of the asteroids than have not been found by telescopes and allow for the construction of a dynamic map of our inner solar system showing the positions and trajectories of asteroids that might threaten Earth.
