evidence indicates that:<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>scores on IQ
tests are rising rapidly from one birth cohort to the next; this increase in IQ
is occurring in geographically and culturally diverse regions of the world; and
this phenomenon (known as the Flynn effect) has been occurring for more than a
century.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The rate of IQ increase is
surprisingly rapid (3 to 6 IQ points per decade).<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The presentation will begin with a brief
critique of IQ tests and the construct of intelligence, after which the
evidence for the Flynn effect will be summarized.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Implications for psychology and cognitive
science then will be presented.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Emphasis
will be placed on the presenter’s research into (1) how the Flynn effect
distorts normative data regarding adult age differences in cognitive ability
and (2) whether the Flynn effect extends to abilities outside the realm of
IQ.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Finally, some implications of the
Flynn effect for society in general will be discussed, e.g., the criteria used
to determine qualification for special education services and to determine
eligibility for the death penalty in the United States.<span style="mso-no-proof:
