As I mentioned on our Federal Relations call on Friday, the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) recently announced a new approach for an upcoming funding opportunity announcement (FOA) that is scheduled to be issued on April 2. ARPA-E plans to announce an initiative on "Advanced Management and Protection of Energy-storage Devices (AMPED). The new initiative is being developed by drawing on some of the information gathered from the agency’s Request for Information (RFI) on Advanced Technologies for Robust Control of Energy Storage, which was issued on February 17. In a new approach, ARPA-E has invited universities and other organizations to sign up through its web site to be on a list of potential teaming partners in conjunction with the release of the new AMPED FOA. <p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif""><u></u> <u></u></span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">It is an Administration priority to integrate the research efforts of the various offices at DOE, including the Office of Science, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE), etc., and ARPA-E. As part of this effort, the DOE Office of Electricity is expected to issue its own funding solicitation on advanced grid monitoring. <u></u><u></u></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif""><u></u> <u></u></span></p><p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">The DOE Office of Electricity hosted a workshop about a year ago to explore the computing needs for the next generation of the grid. The proceedings of the workshop were published this past January. DOE uses its workshops to inform funding solicitations, so researchers interested in working on grid modernization and the upcoming funding opportunity should review the workshop report and its recommendations. <u></u><u></u></span></p>
