Current MWD techniques suffer from low speed transmission. Improvement of MWD technology is becoming a necessity. The purpose of this study is to design a high speed wireless telemetry network that utilizes small RF transceivers. The MWD data collected at the bottom of the drilling pipe can be transmitted to the processor at the surface by using a large number of these RF transceivers. This method of transmission can achieve high data rate up to a few hundred kilo bits per second which significantly surpasses the conventional telemetry techniques. The transceivers built for this project were tested in a simulated drill pipe. Data rate greater than 50 kbps with a packet error rate of 0% has been achieved. The results have proved the application of the transceiver in MWD telemetry.
