Therefore, utilities usually try to encourage users, by using various demand side management (DSM) programs and smart pricing, to shift their high-load appliances to off-peak hours in order to reduce the peak-to-average ratio in load demand. However, due to the complexity of decision making and the need for constantly monitoring the prices, users are unable to efficiently respond to the existing DSM programs. An automated user-side DSM function, e.g., to be embedded in smart meters, can remedy this problem and significantly help not only the grid by balancing the load demand, but also the users by reducing their electricity expenditure. In this presentation, the general architecture of autonomous DSM systems and the interactions among users and the grid in such systems are studies using techniques from game theory. </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:10.0pt'><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'> </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:10.0pt'><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>Bio: Dr. Hamed Mohsenian-Rad received an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology - Iran in 2004 and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of British Columbia - Canada, in 2008. Since October 2010, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas Tech University. His research interests include design and analysis of distributed systems and complex networks such as the Internet and Smart Grids. Dr. Mohsenian-Rad is the recipient of the Pacific Century Graduate Scholarship from the British Columbia Provincial Government and the postdoctoral fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He is an editor of the International Journal of Electronics and Communications.</span><o:p></o:p></p></div></div></body></html>
