<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Dear Colleague,</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Preparing and submitting well-prepared
research grant applications has become more important than ever,
especially in these times of tighter budgets and with a limitation of
two submissions for each proposal. Preparing a clear proposal and
avoiding common errors is critical. When ideas are not clearly
presented in your proposal, reviewers typically either need more
clarification or lose enthusiasm for the ideas presented, even if the
ideas are valid and important.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">On September 16th, I’m teaming up with the
Principal Investigators Association to present a webinar about the <a
href="http://www.mmsend7.com/link.cfm?r=614854371&sid=10594615&m=1095280&u=PRININVEST&s=http://www.on2url.com/app/adtrack.asp?MerchantID=163022&AdID=513466">Significance,
Innovation, and Approach sections of your NIH grant proposal</a>. These
sections are the foundation of your application and need to be
approached with a unified strategy.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">During this webinar, I will discuss how to
strike the appropriate balance between detail and general plans for
experiments. The language you use and the data you choose to include
are important in convincing reviewers that you are competent to do the
work proposed. We will cover some of the simple mistakes that can make
a reviewer lose confidence in the plan you propose. Avoiding some of
the common errors will allow reviewers to concentrate on the value of
your ideas and your plans, and to better judge the quality of the
science in your proposal.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">I’d be pleased if you could join me for

style="font-family: Arial;">Dr. Paul Spearman</span></span></strong><span
style="font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> is Chair
of the NIH AIDS Molecular & Cellular Biology Study Section and
currently supervises four NIH-funded research projects in his
laboratory. He is a Professor of Pediatrics & Microbiology,
Division Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Vice Chair for
Research in the Dept of Pediatrics at Emory University, and Chief
Research Officer for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.</span></span><br>
</em></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Dr. Spearman spent eleven years on the
faculty at Vanderbilt University before assuming the Director’s role at
Emory and during his tenure at Vanderbilt, Dr. Spearman assumed the
role of Principal Investigator of the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Trials
Unit. In addition to his role as Division Chief, he is Associate
Director for Pediatric Studies of the Emory Vaccine Center.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">He was Chair of the National Institutes of
Health Special Emphasis Panel for HIV Vaccine Design and Development in
2004 and a member of the National Cancer Institute Council of
Scientific Advisors from 2006 to 2009. He is on the editorial board of
a number of scientific journals. Dr. Spearman is board-certified in
Infectious Diseases by the ABIM and ABP. He is currently Chair of the
Research Committee for the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society
(PIDS). Dr. Spearman was appointed to the Research Committee of the
Infectious Diseases Society in 2006.</span></span><span
style="font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span></p>
