Hi Cullen Faculty teaching Spring 2025 courses,

We wanted to be sure you are aware of an opportunity for your students as you are finishing up your Spring syllabi.

As Dean Sharma mentioned in his last memo, in December we hosted our Fall 2024 NAE Grand Challenges Summit & Create at UH Showcase<https://www.egr.uh.edu/news/202412/nae-grand-challenges-summit-createuh-showcase-swells-200-participants> and it was our biggest yet. We had 60 undergraduate student posters from first-year all the way to senior capstone projects. An audience of 200+ (mostly undergraduate students) were also inspired by an excellent NAE Faculty Keynote from Dr. Economides.

Many students mentioned how valuable and inspiring it was to see projects completed by students in other majors and other classifications. One junior student shared, "I presented at this summit as a freshman, and yesterday, I had the chance to watch some of the freshmen I currently coach present their own projects. It was a proud, full-circle moment that reminded me of the growth and impact we can have on one another." Overall, it felt great to have a College-wide event that brought students and faculty together.

We are excited to host the summit again next semester, and we want even more courses to get involved to the extent that it would be helpful to you as an instructor. The Spring Summit and Showcase will take place on Monday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to Noon in the Houston Room in Student Center South. If you have a Spring 2025 course that will have final posters/projects that you would like students to present at a College-wide summit, please fill out the form below so we can start to plan.

Benefits of participating:

  * We manage the logistics of the Showcase (room reservations, acquiring and setting up easels with the help of OURMA, etc.).
  * Assistant Dean Kovach is working on a scalable process for printing (and funding the printing!) of student posters, which will reduce cost burdens on your students and logistics burden on you.
  * Your students get to present to a broader range of students, staff and faculty across the College and the university.
  * Your students can compete for the Audience Choice Award (each member of the winning group gets to go on a $35 "shopping spree" in the Campus Store).

Even if you don't have a project that would fit, you could consider offering students extra credit for attending the event. We manage the confirmation of attendance by gathering written reflections. You can find the reflection form from this semester here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://docs.google.com/document/d/12sv_1OyHy4KcPSW7vePgXxIuJNMOiauIhBP26ZSi6kM/edit?usp=sharing__;!!LkSTlj0I!FahlkXJ9AyDdNrDZDSk4Mpd5Hi0vkjRijWkrl3zrZLHNGdgGFHkVf60tMEgHT6oXuUKJ6j5yOW6LCo0ZraECpH13Wys$ > as an example.

Please fill out this form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=vboLF_CikEytSw6PDwxCWQes4xC_-HRMobUq92AQnwhUM0FYWU4yUzNMSUJPNk5MSTQ2NktWVU1WWi4u__;!!LkSTlj0I!FahlkXJ9AyDdNrDZDSk4Mpd5Hi0vkjRijWkrl3zrZLHNGdgGFHkVf60tMEgHT6oXuUKJ6j5yOW6LCo0ZraEChbkIJFY$ > by January 24, 2025 if you are interested in participating and feel free to email us with any questions, ideas, or feedback. Please note that a similar event is being planned to take place in Sugar Land, so faculty and students there don't have to come to main campus for this event. (But they are more than welcome to, if they would like!)

Please note that this is an option for all Cullen faculty and is in no way a requirement. Please do what is best for your course. We are offering this option as a service if it works for you and your students.

Best,

Jami & Alex
