Both mentors are expected to attend the interview in support of their candidate.
May 1, June 1, or June 30: Ph.D. students must be able to begin their appointments on these dates to be eligible to apply. This means that any other fellowship support must be completed before then, and PhD students must be in their mentor’s labs by the appointment start date.
Please pay particular attention to the research areas of biomedical informatics and data science that NLM supports, and in the required curriculum. See the “Purpose of the NLM Training Program<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353571-e0954b29-8f5a__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!H2rBp06w7oRWGk_wMqTMXAnbuDCxX2rF3mrwSsrA0V-WpTl2S5r4vwC0cEEFVBVRfwVqf_JTINMo8hrZNZbr$>” and “NLM Curriculum Plan<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808331831-e73d12e0-7efe__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!H2rBp06w7oRWGk_wMqTMXAnbuDCxX2rF3mrwSsrA0V-WpTl2S5r4vwC0cEEFVBVRfwVqf_JTINMo8kJpGObz$>” sections on the NLM web site<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/__;!!LkSTlj0I!H2rBp06w7oRWGk_wMqTMXAnbuDCxX2rF3mrwSsrA0V-WpTl2S5r4vwC0cEEFVBVRfwVqf_JTINMo8o19ygyd$>. The website includes the projects of current and former NLM trainees<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353574-9847d119-9c21__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!H2rBp06w7oRWGk_wMqTMXAnbuDCxX2rF3mrwSsrA0V-WpTl2S5r4vwC0cEEFVBVRfwVqf_JTINMo8hOkQZK4$>.
Each trainee must have two tenure-track or tenured mentors who are members of the NLM Training Faculty, or who are applying to join the training faculty because they are supporting a candidate in the current round of applications. It is preferable, although not required, for the mentors to be affiliated with two separate institutions in the GCC, or at least two departments at the same institution. It is not necessary for the mentors to have an existing collaboration.
A faculty mentor may be a primary mentor for only one NLM trainee at a time. Faculty may be secondary mentor for two NLM trainees at one time.
Ph.D. students are eligible for up to three years of support.
All re-appointments are dependent upon a satisfactory progress review and continued funding from the agency.
Fellowships provide NIH-level stipends, partial tuition and health insurance benefits, and travel to approved conferences. See the “What the NLM Fellowship Provides<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353572-e7dfc016-01a7__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!H2rBp06w7oRWGk_wMqTMXAnbuDCxX2rF3mrwSsrA0V-WpTl2S5r4vwC0cEEFVBVRfwVqf_JTINMo8jk1Ek8m$>” section on the website.
