Dear Cullen College Faculty,

Please see below an opportunity from the National Library of Medicine.

Thanks.

---------------------------

This is a call for PhD student (Predoctoral) and Postdoctoral applications for the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Training Program in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/__;!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQpDS7MBu$>.

Applicants must be US Citizens, or Permanent Residents already in possession of a Green Card, who are affiliated with a GCC member institution<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/about/__;!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQtECflEF$> (Note: for HMRI, only postdocs are eligible to apply.).

Deadlines:

Before Friday, September 27: Applicants must discuss their proposed project with the NLM Steering Committee member from their institution, to ensure it is appropriate for this training program. See the list under the NLM Steering Committee and Training Faculty<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353573-b6a59b50-87a6__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQp9pxxxf$> section.

Friday, September 27 before 11:59 pm: Required Letters of Intent<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808051464-984abb94-1eff__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQqs3te-3$> are due; also due are any faculty requests for new membership in the NLM training faculty in order to sponsor a candidate (see “Faculty Eligibility”<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353573-bb3f1459-2252__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQsZPFeOI$> section). Faculty can be provisionally approved, but are only added to the training faculty if their candidate is awarded a fellowship. Faculty must be tenure-track or tenured.

Friday, October 18 before 11:59 pm: Applications, mentor recommendations, and all required materials<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808051464-984abb94-1eff__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQqs3te-3$> are due, including letters of recommendation and transcripts.

Interviews for all selected applicants will be held on one day (no exceptions) – PhD students on Monday, November 18 in the afternoon, and postdocs on Friday, November 22 in the morning. Interviews are a total of 20 minutes long, and timeslots will be assigned in advance. Both mentors are expected to attend the interview in support of their candidate.

December 1, 2024, or January 1, 2025: PhD students and postdoctoral applicants must begin their appointments by this date to be eligible to apply. This means that any other fellowship support must be completed before then; and PhD students must be in their mentor’s labs and postdocs must begin their jobs by December 1 or January 1.

Please pay particular attention to the research areas of biomedical informatics and data science that NLM supports, and in the required curriculum for both PhD students and postdocs. See the “Purpose of the NLM Training Program<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353571-e0954b29-8f5a__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQgfnSjBK$>” and “NLM Curriculum Plan<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808331831-e73d12e0-7efe__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQr9gv_RK$>” sections on the NLM web site<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/__;!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQpvNv0iF$>. The website includes the projects of current and former NLM trainees<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353574-9847d119-9c21__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQtJcgPm2$>.

Each trainee must have two tenure-track or tenured mentors who are members of the NLM Training Faculty, or who are applying to join the training faculty because they are supporting a candidate in the current round of applications. It is preferable, although not required, for the mentors to be affiliated with two separate institutions in the GCC.

A faculty mentor may be a primary mentor for only one NLM trainee at a time. Faculty may be secondary mentor for two NLM trainees at one time.

PhD students (predoctoral fellows) are eligible for up to three years of support. Postdoctoral fellows are eligible for up to two years of support. The NLM funding agency expects postdocs to commit to staying for two years of fellowship, in order to be truly trained in biomedical informatics.

All re-appointments are dependent upon a satisfactory progress review and continued funding from the agency.

Faculty are encouraged to recruit postdoctoral candidates for the NLM fellowship nationally, and are responsible for explaining to them the expectations and requirements of the NLM Training Program (including coursework for postdocs – see NLM Curriculum Plan<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808331831-e73d12e0-7efe__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQr9gv_RK$> section of the website).

Fellowships provide NIH-level stipends, partial tuition and health insurance benefits, and travel to approved conferences. See the “What the NLM Fellowship Provides<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/bmi-nlm/*1556808353572-e7dfc016-01a7__;Iw!!LkSTlj0I!EVklwv4ScMX9tMJJxsQlO0dGxrqqyEb05GaR_EOwU_dHoUncAxe2kmlo6XKghwqzkUg3jqeNTMPGQnKYm5Ps$>” section on the website.
