Greetings, UH Engineering Ladies! You are invited to participate in a study to understand how women engineers construct their Engineering Identity. This study asks questions about the experiences of females who participated in Enrichment Programs (i.e., Outreach) as Middle School students and have continued to study Engineering. Participants will be asked to reflect upon the effectiveness of the Outreach Program to support her in entering and continuing in the educational path to an engineering career, either in industry, government, or universities. An Enrichment Program can be a camp, an activity, an after-school program, a club, a conference, a mentorship, a challenge, a design competition, a research experience, or other Outreach opportunity for hands-on engineering, experienced outside of the classroom/school setting during this age range of 11-14 years.

If you are interested and have participated in a Middle School Enrichment Program, please read the consent information posted to the prescreening questions at the link below. If you are under 18 and want to participate in this study, please read the consent information with a parent and have them complete the first questions; then you will give your assent and complete the remainder of the prescreening questions. This portion of the study should take approximately 15 minutes, and results will only be shared in the aggregate. We will notify you by your provided email if you are selected for the rest of this study, so please double-check the address that you enter into the prescreening form. Once selected, if you agree to continue participating, there will be two interviews (a one-hour primary and a half-hour follow-up) between June 2022 and January 2023. All who participate in and complete the interview portion of the study will receive a $25 electronic Visa gift card. Your participation will help inform recommendation for procedures and practices for current and future engineering outreach to Middle School aged students. We also ask that you consider forwarding this invitation to other female colleagues and to High School students who are planning to major in Engineering.

The research study has been reviewed by the University of Houston Institutional Review Board. If you have questions about the study, you may contact either one of us at klschaefer3 at uh.edu<mailto:klschaefer3 at uh.edu> or jahenderson5 at uh.edu<mailto:jahenderson5 at uh.edu>.
