SWPDC is a multi-institutional consortium that is supported by an FDA P50 grant, anchored by Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and is dedicated to improving children’s health by supporting pediatric device innovators to create novel pediatric medical devices with local, regional, and national institutional and innovation partners.

Four seed funding awards of $25,000 each (direct costs only) will be available this year.

Target Uses:
1.     Support for pediatric device development by BCM faculty members
2.     Support for pilot clinical trials @ TCH/BCM with BCM faculty members as the principal investigator(s) with novel pediatric devices including those developed by startup companies

Eligibility Criteria:

  *   Principal Investigator (PI) applicants must be BCM faculty members.
  *   There is no limit on the number of times an applicant can receive an award.
  *   All awarded funds (type 1 College funds) must be spent (not encumbered) in the one-year period between July 1 of the current year and June 30 of the following year. No-cost extensions will NOT be granted. Any unused funds will be returned to BCM.

Thank you to all who attended our Texas Life Science Forum Panel on Pediatric Device Innovation in Houston. We had a great discussion about regulatory hurdles in pediatric device companies.

Congratulations to SWPDC portfolio companies Vivifi Medical and XN Health, who were both awarded as being among the 10 Most Promising Companies at the event!

  *   Vivifi Medical (Houston) is developing a minimally invasive solution to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and men’s health problems through a quick and easy vascular procedure.
  *   XN Health (Houston) is a medical device company combating diaphragmatic atrophy in mechanically ventilated patients to facilitate the weaning process through a novel phrenic nerve stimulation device.

SWPDC is excited to announce its new partnership with the Ignite Healthcare Network. The Fire Pitch Competition is the culmination of Ignite Healthcare Network's annual accelerator program created to encourage innovation in emerging women-led healthcare companies. The accelerator provides opportunities for women entrepreneurs to engage with advisors, potential customers, and investors to accelerate the growth of their companies.

Congratulations to Jessica Walsh, CEO and Founder of Rx Bandz, for the recipient of the first-ever SWPDC Ignite Pitch Competition Pediatric Prize for $25,000. Rx Bandz is developing the next generation of patient-centric auto-injectors to deliver a wide range of injectable medications for patients around the world.

Eligibility: Eligible devices must be FDA-regulated medical devices with a pediatric indication (0 - 21 years of age). If no teams meet the criteria or requirements, the prize will not be awarded. The prize will be decided by the SWPDC judging team.

Applications are closed. Competition dates are May 18-19, 2022.

Once again, the SWPDC is sponsoring prizes for pediatric device companies via the Rice Business Plan Competition. Up to $50,000 in cash awards are available to support the advancement and commercialization of novel pediatric medical devices.

Eligibility: Eligible devices must be FDA-regulated medical devices with a pediatric indication (0 - 21 years of age). If no teams meet the criteria or requirements, the prize will not be awarded.

Applications are closed. The competition dates are April 7-9, 2022.
