SEI Formation at the Li Metal/Electrolyte Interface: Structure, Morphology, Composition, and Properties

Dr. Perla B. Balbuena

Department of Chemical Engineering, Texas A&M University,

College Station, TX 77843

Abstract: The critical role that the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) may play in the battery performance and cycle life is the focus of many battery research studies. Numerous experimental and theoretical investigations on this topic contribute to elucidating the correlation between the SEI composition, its properties, and the morphology of the deposited Li metal during plating, as well as SEI evolution and effects during Li stripping events. The ultimate goal is to be able to find the key issues that may control the intrinsically unstable metal/electrolyte interfaces and therefore help extending battery life with sustained high battery performances. In this talk, we will discuss a new first-principles based methodology that allows for a rapid and accurate determination of the SEI nucleation morphologies and compositions for a given electrolyte and how these SEI structures and compositions may change under conditions of flooded or lean electrolytes. Moreover, we will analyze the impact that these SEI characteristics on longer times SEI growth.

Bio: Prof. Perla B. Balbuena obtained her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, MSc from the University of Pennsylvania, and BS from Universidad Tecnologica Nacional, Argentina, all in Chemical Engineering. From 1997 to 2004 she was Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina. In 2004, she was appointed as full Professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, where she currently holds the Mike O’Connor Chair I. She has joint appointments as Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Professor of Chemistry at Texas A&M. Her research focuses on first-principles computational materials design, with main areas in catalysis, electrocatalysis, and battery materials. Dr. Balbuena has done pioneering work in computational analysis of lithium ion batteries and fuel cell materials, and has also investigated materials for CO2 capture, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. Dr. Balbuena published 341 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and has co-edited five books in her areas of specialization. Her work has been cited more than 20,000 times (h-index 72) according to Google Scholar. Dr. Balbuena was elected fellow of ECS in 2022, AIChE in 2022, and AAAS in 2013.
