[Dean's Memo] <https://www.egr.uh.edu>
Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,
I hope that this memo finds you well. While we continue to proceed with cautious optimism, so far, our full fall reopening has gone smoothly. Now with classes fully underway, I look forward to reconnecting with you all via increased in-person functions where appropriate, including events.
I have a few items of importance to share with you all:
FALL SEMESTER UPDATES
Per Provost Short’s recent note<https://uh.edu/infotech/services/e-comm/official-email/view.php?sendit=aHR0cHM6Ly9jbG91ZGFwcHMudWguZWR1L3NlbmRpdC93LzFkVjBjN28wSHpXRWlBSUtGSzUwUmcvWW5NUVVXMVZMVWNqTnJJRDVtMHpQQS9NUXRrSWdXMmFlazFrcDZvSDg5MjFxUUE=>, as of this past Monday, September 27, we have resumed full density/in-person instruction. I appreciate your thoughtfulness as we navigated the last month of soft openings. Based on the current analysis of testing and contact tracing data, we have been able to safely return to in-person instruction, and to date, the risk of spread on campus remains relatively low. That being said, please continue to observe all current COVID-19 safety protocols to ensure our ability to continue working towards a return to normalcy. Any faculty with questions should contact their respective department chairs. A full list of current safety protocols can be found online here<https://uh.edu/covid-19/guidelines-protocols/>.
DIVERSITY COMMITMENT
The University of Houston has been named a 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award Recipient by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The Cullen College has also received praise from the American Society for Engineering Education, with a bronze status in its Diversity Recognition Program. We have a well-established tradition of encouraging diversity and inclusion at the college and our goal is to keep building on our successes. As part of this effort, we have launched a website dedicated to our efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion. I encourage you to explore this website at your leisure and view spotlighted members of our community<https://www.egr.uh.edu/our-college/diversity-equity-inclusion/faces> who have made outstanding contributions at the college and beyond.

UPCOMING EVENTS
As part of our slow and steady return to normalcy, we have begun reinstating events where it has been deemed safe and appropriate to do so. As such, we will hold our annual Fall Faculty and Staff meeting in person tomorrow, Friday, October 1 at 11am in Engineering Building 2, room W-122. For those of you who may not be ready yet to attend an in-person function, we will also offer the meeting via a livestream. The livestream will be available at this link: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://uh.mediasite.com/mediasite/Play/fe1d34631474448b9f4fbc35f1a9b5591d__;!!LkSTlj0I!XiSMiT2S1xUZOZ637BGvSEhZMhv0mEb38EdVdjfD-voB-fwxAusUrJEpOdMlN8_gh-U$
For our Leadership Board members, we will hold our annual Fall dinner and meeting on October 21 and 22. Additional details are forthcoming. I look forward to seeing you all then!
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
This month’s outstanding staff member is:
Philip Abraham
Department Business Administrator, Industrial Engineering
[Staff Spotlight]
Philip Abraham has served as the Department Business Administrator for Industrial Engineering since first joining the University of Houston in 2018. He oversees and manages a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to administration, finance, human resources, expenditures of grants and contracts, and more. Abraham is a great communicator and well versed in both internal and external communications, be it with department personnel or stakeholders. His dedication to excellent customer service shines through in all aspects of his work, and his noteworthy achievements include streamlining and implementing effective financial management policies, creating new onboarding processes for staff, and installing a social media presence for the department. Abraham’s can-do attitude and strong work ethic have been major assets not only for the Industrial Engineering Department, but the entire college as well.
As always, thank you all for everything you do for the college. I wish you all a safe and healthy fall semester.
Warm regards,
