[Dean's Memo]<https://www.egr.uh.edu>

Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,

Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s Engineering Leadership Board dinner and meeting – it was great being able to see you all in person. This has been a productive year with many exciting developments, from our expanded program offerings to the unveiling of our new marketing campaign, “Engineered for what’s next.” If you have any questions about any of the topics covered, please feel free to contact me at dean at egr.uh.edu<mailto:dean at egr.uh.edu>.

I do hope you will also consider joining us at our upcoming Gala on November 11. You can learn more about that event here<https://www.egr.uh.edu/eaa/alumni-awards-gala>.

NAE GRAND CHALLENGE SCHOLARS

I am proud to report that the Cullen College is now an official member of the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program. Our implementation of this program will be a natural extension of our highly successful First Year Experience and will facilitate connections between our students and faculty mentors. The program is currently open to undergraduates and is accepting applications. To learn more, please visit the program’s newly launched website<https://www.egr.uh.edu/nae-grand-challenge-scholars-program>.

CULLEN COMMUNITY ACCOLADES

It gives me great pleasure to recognize some of the accomplishments of our faculty and staff. Please join me in congratulating the following individuals:

• Dr. Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal was asked to serve on the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research (NABMRR) for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
• Dr. Debora Rodrigues has been selected as a Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials by the Executive Board of the IAAM.
• Dr. Metin Akay received an Honoris Causa degree from the Silesian University of Technology.
• Our talented communications team received three awards, a bronze and two silver distinctions, from the 2021 Excalibur Awards held by the Public Relations Society of America, Houston Chapter.

COVID-19 AND VACCINATION

Thanks to everyone’s collective vigilance, we have been able to successfully navigate this semester. If you have not received a vaccine yet, there are still opportunities to do so. You can learn more about vaccination on the University’s official COVID-19 webpage<https://uh.edu/covid-19/information/vaccine/>. You may also be wondering if receiving a booster is a good option for you. While this is a highly individualized decision, the CDC provides helpful information on the benefits of boosters to those who are eligible on its website<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html__;!!LkSTlj0I!WFyKoYRj1L1pDkWQilGr2VdhUIec3sdVGYwh7Iu1gbO9ARhTAuLJF96RaRVYfYdfopA$ >.

While we have been fortunate thus far, as we approach peak cold and flu season, please remember to exercise all of the proper processes and protocols surrounding COVID-19, and other serious illnesses for that matter. Please take this time to refresh yourselves on the official University policies<https://uh.edu/covid-19/guidelines-protocols/>.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

This month’s outstanding staff member is:

Kelly Schulz

Program Director, Undergraduate Programs

[Staff Spotlight]
Kelly currently serves as Program Director in the division of undergraduate programs in our college. Kelly has had a long connection with the University. Her most recent degree was a Master's in Education from UH in 2012. While a student, Kelly started working with the office of UH Admissions, and served in various roles there until 2019, when we were fortunate enough to recruit her. In her current role, Kelly wears many hats, including advising, scheduling classroom assignments, processing transfer petitions, and above all, officially certifying our seniors for graduation upon completion of their degrees. All of this is a very heavy workload, but you would never know it if you only went by Kelly’s ever-present cheerful and welcoming smile with which she meets each task and person at the college. The Cullen College is quite large, and has only grown larger in recent years. Kelly is a key team member who makes sure that behind the scenes, all the gears and wheels are turning and running perfectly. In activities outside of work, Kelly is also an avid runner, with a marathon under her belt already!

Please continue to take care and stay well!

Warm regards,
