Dear NSM Faculty:
An NSM Faculty Development Workshop is scheduled for Friday, November 12, from 2:30-3:30 pm, in Science Teaching Laboratories (STL), Room 202. Please note this is an in-person session. A flyer is attached.
Topic: “Cultivating Scientific Communication through Graphic Summary”
Presenter:
Dr. Lisa Farmer
Instructional Assistant Professor, Department of Biology and Biochemistry
The graphic summary is a combination of text and graphics that models a concept or process and presents evidence to support an argument, thus serving as a learning bridge to writing scientifically. This format can be used to train students in interpreting primary literature, finding and evaluating sources beyond the textbook, and communicating effectively and creatively. To create graphic summaries, students are given a prescribed set of guidelines for creating a succinct, one-page summary designed around 1-2 figures or experiments within the greater context of a paper of my choosing, but are given creative freedom in their individual constructions. Draft submissions are peer reviewed, the feedback of which is weighted into their final grade, and students incorporate peer feedback into their final graphic summary submissions. The concise format introduces students to disciplinary conventions for scientific writing and requires students to exercise the same level of analytical skill as a traditional written summary, but is faster and more interesting to grade. This activity mimics production of scientific research posters, which many students will do at some point in their careers. Instructors that are seeking creative new approaches to assess student scientific communication skills without requiring extensive writing assignments will benefit from this workshop.
RSVP: This is an in-person session. Please RSVP as space is limited.

I hope you will join us for the session on November 12!
