Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff,
It is my pleasure to introduce Dr. Craig Glennie as the Cullen College's first Director of Engineering Defense Research Initiatives (EDRI). The creation of this new position is in direct response to one of the strategic initiatives stated in the College's Strategic Plan, which is to "restructure the research enterprise to increase research activity, productivity and external visibility; and increase technology transfer and translational research." This new role aims to increase our footprint among defense agencies and establish our College as a leader in national defense. Dr. Glennie will formally assume this role on April 1.
Dr. Glennie joined the Cullen College in 2010 as an Assistant Professor, and since that time, has played an active role in advancing defense-related research at UH. In addition to receiving a Full Professor promotion last September, Dr. Glennie also leads the Geosensing Systems Graduate Program and recently assumed leadership of the National Science Foundation's National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM) after Dr. Ramesh Shrestha retired earlier this year in January. He has been either a Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on numerous research grants from various agencies, including the NSF, NASA, USDOT, GoMRI, USACE-CRREL and other industry partners. He also currently holds an appointment with the US Army Corps of Engineers leading their national LiDAR efforts, and holds requisite security clearance to facilitate collaboration on both classified and unclassified research with national defense agencies. Dr. Glennie's extensive accolades, accomplishments, connections and background make him the most qualified member of our College to direct EDRI.
In his new role as the Director of EDRI, Dr. Glennie will coordinate with the Associate Dean for Research and Facilities to enhance UH's visibility with defense agencies; participate in defense-related forums and workshops to understand research needs and how they can be best met with College faculty; coordinate and interact with national research arms of defense agencies, including various branches of the military; develop strategies and implement a plan for enhanced engagement with defense agencies; coordinate with EPIE to boost innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities; expand industry partnerships in coordination with CCE Industrial Relations to create competitive proposals; and partner with CCE Research Computing to expand computing activities with defense agencies.
Dr. Glennie is exceptionally prepared to provide strategic direction for our defense initiatives. His outstanding leadership qualities, experience with managing large research teams and sponsor expectations, and current connections give me the utmost confidence in his ability to grow and develop our enterprise. Under his leadership, the Cullen College will continue advancing towards our 50-in-5 goals. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Dr. Glennie is his new role!
Warm Regards,
