[Dean's Memo] <https://www.egr.uh.edu>
Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,
As you are all aware, the formal transition back to campus began earlier this month on June 15. While our college has been open and fully operational since last August, this is just a reminder that all units and offices must have on-campus presence with adequate coverage during weekday work hours, with all faculty and staff coming to campus at least two days a week. This transition ensures that the full return on August 2nd will be as smooth as possible. I’m very much looking forward to reconnecting with you all in person and getting back to our normal operations.
Meanwhile, I have some exciting college updates to share with you all:
DIVERSITY COMMITMENT
The Cullen College was recently ranked in the top 15 for several metrics measuring diversity in the field of engineering by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). According to the statistics highlighted in the May 2021 issue of ASEE Connections, the Cullen College ranked no. 12 in the nation for both the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students and underrepresented minorities. To see how we measure up across the board, you can view the full report here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://ira.asee.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Engineering-by-the-Numbers-FINAL-2021.pdf__;!!LkSTlj0I!Voxdfai1sFlT2gHyVt3O8BlWaT-Dv2zLKJtVBkN8ph62nXZPrU4w4Iq5Ydj8NjL8uYQ$>. While these statistics are encouraging, I would like to ask you all to continue looking for ways we can prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at the college.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES
During the last several weeks, we have seen an influx of awards and recognitions from various departments across the college. Among these accomplishments are Dr. Roberto Ballarini’s election as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the selection of Dr. Stanko Brankovic as a Fellow of The Electrochemical Society (ECS), Class of 2021, which only inducts 15 new members each year. Additionally, the Communications team brought in two new Crystal Awards from the American Marketing Association. Please join me in congratulating Drs. Ballarini and Brankovic, as well as our Communications staff on their well-deserved achievements!
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
This month’s outstanding staff member is:
Miranda Vernon-Harrison
Director of Graduate Student Affairs
[Staff Spotlight]
Miranda Vernon-Harrison has been with the Cullen College for seven years and currently serves as the Director of Graduate Student Affairs. In her role, she implements and updates graduate student policies, and coordinates with the UH Graduate School and the Cullen College’s various departments. Her passion for our students comes through in many ways, from assisting with petitions, internships and training, and just overall keeping everything on track. Her diligence and empathy are no doubt largely responsible for why our retention rates among graduate students remain so high, and her ability to put others at ease in stressful situations has been a huge asset, especially during the pandemic. Often going above and beyond, she is quick to pitch in and help when other departments need assistance. Thank you, Miranda, for your enduring kindness, hard work and professionalism.
Thank you again for all that you do for the college. Just as a reminder, if you have any questions about returning to campus, or want to know what safety measures that the University is taking, you can find answers to these questions and more on the Human Resources website<https://uh.edu/human-resources/return-to-campus/index>. Please continue to stay safe and consider getting vaccinated if you have not yet and are able. I look forward to seeing you all in just a few short weeks.
Warm regards,
