Dear Cullen College Faculty and Staff,
As mentioned in my last memo, President Khator recently announced the University of Houston will return to full in-person functionality for the Fall 2021 semester. In her statement to all University faculty and staff, she outlines our guiding principles, health and safety priorities, and the official plan for transitioning back to campus. You can read her message in full here<https://uh.edu/infotech/services/e-comm/official-email/view.php?sendit=aHR0cHM6Ly9jbG91ZGFwcHMudWguZWR1L3NlbmRpdC93LzFkVjBjN28wSHpXRWlBSUtGSzUwUmcvWW5NUVVXMVZMVWNqTnJJRDVtMHpQQS9vTzN4WEdNWW1ab2Z4ZUZ5N25jbERn>.
While the majority of you have been coming to campus since last August when we reopened in a limited capacity, the University is marking June 15 as the beginning of the formal transition, with a full return of all faculty and staff by August 2. As we are all well aware, August will be here in the blink of an eye, so I ask that you begin making preparations now.
Beginning June 15, all faculty and staff must return to campus a minimum of two days per week. Adequate, 5-day-per-week staff coverage is expected for all the college’s various offices and departments. Your department’s supervisor will be contacting you to discuss a transition plan that works best for your area’s needs in the coming weeks. While the University has marked August 2 as the official deadline for full return, some departments may require full-time on-campus presence sooner. Additionally, the University has provided a Transition and Full Reopening FAQ<https://uh.edu/human-resources/hr-communications/transition_and_full_reopening_faq.pdf>. Questions about the reopening not covered here should be directed to Gaston Reinoso, Associate Vice President of Human Resources at greinoso at uh.edu<mailto:greinoso at uh.edu>.
If we are to complete this transition successfully, we will need everyone’s support. Please continue to keep yourself familiarized with the University’s official COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, all of which are available online here<https://uh.edu/covid-19/>, and practice good health and hygiene. Per Governor Abbot’s May 18 Executive Order, face coverings are no longer required on campus. However, the University strongly encourages the wearing of face coverings, especially for those individuals who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination is not required to return to campus, but if you are able, please consider doing so. You can learn more about how and where to get vaccinated here<https://uh.edu/covid-19/information/vaccine/> – many places are now accepting walk-ins without an appointment.
Thank you for your continued commitment to the Cullen College. The last year has been filled with uncertainty, but you kept us going. Working in virtual environments has introduced some exciting technologies and learning opportunities, many of which have the potential to expand some of our offerings in new ways. The lessons learned during our time away will guide us in building an even greater, immersive environment for our students. I challenge you to ask yourselves how we can leverage these opportunities into furthering our college’s upward momentum.
Once again, thank you for your compassion, resilience and patience in navigating the last year. I look forward to working alongside you all and welcoming our students back to campus this fall.
Warm Regards,
