Dear Cullen College Faculty, Staff and Members of our Leadership Board,

The start of the fall semester is rapidly approaching, and there is a great deal to be excited about. Soon, our halls, classrooms and labs will once again be filled with students, we will begin hosting long-awaited events, some of which are already in the works, but most importantly, we will continue our path in establishing ourselves as a top engineering institution. Thanks to you all, that path has largely been uninterrupted, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic. I fully expect that momentum to skyrocket with our full return to campus.

There are several items of note that I would like to make you aware of:

NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS

I am pleased to report that we continue to make progress in our ongoing efforts to increase the Cullen College’s stature and ranking. Earlier this month, we welcomed our 15th National Academy of Engineering (NAE) member to our faculty ranks — Dr. Hao Huang. Dr. Huang is an aviation industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience at General Electric and 80 patents to his name. In addition to being a member of the NAE, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Fellow of the Society of Automotive and Aerospace Engineers (SAE). Welcome, Dr. Huang!

Additionally, we have received notice of an NSF CAREER Award for Dr. Devin Shaffer. This is the fourth CAREER Award received by one of our faculty members in 2021, and the 23rd received over the last 10 years. Congratulations to Dr. Shaffer on this well-deserved achievement, as well as to all our other CAREER Award recipients. Your hard work and dedication continue to propel us to new heights. Thanks to you, the Cullen College has become a leader in nationally acclaimed research activity.

2020 COMMENCEMENT

We are planning to welcome back more than 200 of our 2020 graduates to campus next month to participate in their long-overdue commencement exercises. The Cullen College will partner with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in a joint ceremony on Friday, August 13 at 9:00am at the Fertitta Center. The College will keep you informed as additional details are released.

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS IN 80 DAYS

In commemoration of our 80th anniversary, the college is celebrating its history for 80 days. The celebration kicked off on July 13 and will continue through September 30, culminating in the release of a very special issue of Parameters magazine. STAFF SPOTLIGHT

This month’s outstanding staff member is:

Charkethia Mimms

Department Business Administrator, Petroleum Engineering
[Staff Spotlight]
Charkethia Mimms has been with the University of Houston for seven years, and has served as the Department Business Administrator for Petroleum Engineering since 2016. During her time in her current role, the department has grown extensively. Petroleum engineering has seen greatly increased research expenditures, the recruitment of four NAE faculty members, and an overall expansion of the department’s size and reach. As part of this growth, Mimms has transformed all business operations and has greatly improved processes, staying ahead of the near-constant demands of a quickly-growing department. From helping with the new building transition, to supporting the day-to-day needs of the department’s faculty and staff, Mimms has proven herself to be a valuable asset who is capable of accomplishing anything thrown her way.
As a final reminder, all units, faculty and staff must return to campus on a full-time basis this coming Monday, August 2. I am excited to take this long overdue step with you all and get back to what we do best – excellence in engineering education, research and student success.
