[CCoE Notice] LGBTQ Allies in STEM

There are currently only 66 LGBTQ allies working in STEM at UH (only 24 are faculty). There are 835 faculty and staff allies in total. LGBTQ students are in need of more representation of allies in the STEM faculty. I would appreciate your help in encouraging STEM faculty to attend one of the Cougar Ally Trainings. This will enable them to post their placard (see below) and be listed on our website. This helps LGBTQ+ student feel more welcome at UH.



We surveyed a small sample of LGBTQ+ STEM students and here is what we found.

88% said they were out to many, most, or all people, but only 44% said they are out in their major at UH.

Only 33% feel comfortable being their authentic LGBTQ+ self in their UH STEM classes and with STEM faculty.

But, 77% said it is important to them to feel their LGBTQ+ identity is supported and welcome in their UH STEM classes.



These numbers result in LGBTQ+ STEM students feeling isolated here at UH. STEM faculty displaying a symbol of allyship can make an impact on these students.
