Dear Engineering Faculty, Staff and Students,

Winter storms Uri and Viola wreaked unimaginable havoc in our area this last week, leaving many of us without water and power for disastrous lengths of time. Thankfully, the worst is behind us and temperatures are continuing to rise. I hope the storms did not cause too much damage to your property and belongings, and that you have been able to find some relief these last several days as well as get some much-needed rest.

Fortunately, the campus and engineering buildings did not face any extensive damage. As you may have seen, campus experienced significant impacts last week due to the city's water and power shortages. As a result, most buildings lost heat and water. Some of our college's computing center services were also temporarily offline during this time. Facilities has been working tirelessly to get campus back to being fully operational, and I'm happy to report that these issues have been resolved and we are ready to welcome you back (whether in person or online) starting tomorrow, Monday February 22nd.

As we all work to get back to "normal", please know that we are prioritizing flexibility and compassion. Students may not have had the ability to complete coursework or study for exams, so we are asking faculty to take this into consideration as they try to find ways to reschedule assignments and exams.

Additionally, for faculty and staff working remotely due to COVID-19, if your ability to work from home has been impacted, please do not hesitate to let your department's supervisor know so that work rotation schedules may be adjusted if necessary. It is very likely that most, if not all, of our college community was severely impacted by the winter storms, so if you are continuing to deal with any extreme circumstances, please reach out and let us know. We are here for you and will provide any help that we can during this difficult time.

Just a reminder, the Cougar Emergency Fund is available to our students currently experiencing hardship who may need financial relief during these ongoing crises. You can learn more about the fund here<https://uh.edu/dsaes/cef/> and may access the application form online here<https://uh.edu/financial/forms/covid-19-cougar-emergency-fund.pdf>.

Please continue to stay safe during these trying times. We will continue to keep you updated on any future developments, and if you know of a fellow Coog in need, remember to be compassionate and lend a hand where you can. We will get through this together.

Warm regards,
