Abstract: The AI/ML applications today have attracted broad interests and demands in both academia and industry, including geophysics research in Oil & Gas domain. ML provides innovative view of geophysical problems, as well as inspires new latent features and algorithms. Meanwhile, as an evolving technology, ML approaches have very different solution architecture and workflow from traditional approaches and require deeper understanding and collaboration from both data scientist and domain experts like geophysicists and petrophysicists. In the ML tour of geophysical research applications, we will explore the ML development lifecycle, ML fundamentals, and the relationship to geophysical research. We will also look at the ML implementations through the lens of domain-relevant case studies, from seismic data processing and seismic interpretation, to operation optimization. Using experiments and experiences, we will discuss how ML has helped geophysical research and future development.
