Dear Engineering Faculty and Staff,
I hope that this message finds you safe and in good health. The last several weeks have been unprecedented and filled with challenges. There is still much that we do not know about the road ahead, but one thing is certain, the UH Engineering family will persevere. We are strong, and we are going to get through this together.
As you all know, starting on Monday, March 23, all classes will transition to being offered remotely (online or alternative format) for the duration of the semester. Thanks to your unwavering support and dedication, I am confident that we will be able to make the jump to remote teaching as smooth as possible.
I cannot fully express my gratitude enough for your hard work and patience throughout this process. Our students are our number one priority and thanks to you, they will be able to finish their spring semester studies.
I would like to offer a few resources and reminders to help you navigate the upcoming weeks:
The University's Official COVID-19 website.<https://www.uh.edu/covid-19/> This is one of your most valuable resources. Please check it regularly for important updates.
Online Learning. The University has provided a variety of tools to ensure the successful transition to remote instruction, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Blackboard. While we hope that there are no major issues next week, here are some useful tips to keep operations as smooth as possible:
* Use your downtime to record your lectures offline (in 10-minute chunks, preferably) and then deploy these pre-recorded lecture segments via OneDrive and Blackboard to your students. This approach will give your students on-demand access to your lectures, and you can use a live Zoom session to do recitation and problem-solving.
* Snagit software is a great option for offline recording. This software is now free to download for use until the end of June. You can access it here<http://links.email.techsmithmail.com/servlet/MailView?ms=NjQyNTg4NTcS1&r=MzI2MTU2NTM1NDUyS0&j=MTg0MTQwNDQ4MgS2&mt=2&rj=MTg0MTM5NjI3NgS2&rt=0>.
* Please review the attached technical support options document for instructors during the COVID-19 Emergency. Please save this file for future reference.
Travel. The University of Houston is now restricting all international travel and domestic business travel at least through the end of April and is continuing to require off-campus self-quarantine of 14 days for any international travel since Feb. 25, 2020. Read the UH Travel Restrictions<https://www.uh.edu/covid-19/travel/> and instructions for reporting and self-quarantine<https://www.uh.edu/covid-19/self-quarantine/>. These restrictions are mandatory.
Stay Connected. Make sure you are following us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (@UHengineering). You can find important updates here, along with some fun and useful content as well. Use our pages to connect with your peers and your students.
Take a deep breath. Remember, you are not alone, and we are going to make it through this. As a reminder, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)<https://cloudapps.uh.edu/sendit/l/1dV0c7o0HzWEiAIKFK50Rg/ulLeNDmOX0huGe92hOpzGA/bmBgW3BV160NKZgfaY0HxQ> offers an array of services intended to meet your needs where you are. The phone number is 713.743.5454.
Please continue to be safe and vigilant, and most importantly, follow the advice of our public health officials. Together as Engineering Coogs, we will weather this storm. We are strong, we are resilient, and we will persevere.
Warm regards,
