Controlled Growth and Emergent Properties of ‘Heavy’ Metal Oxides and Chalcogenides

Abstract: Transition metal oxides and chalcogenides containing heavy elements often possess large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and strong electron interactions due to the high atomic numbers and compact d-orbitals. The interplay of SOC and electron correlation is a key ingredient for a variety of novel topological electronic and magnetic ground states. In this talk, I will present our recent experimental work on two representative material systems, namely iridates and layered metal chalcogenides which exhibit a broad spectrum of intriguing physical properties. For the iridates, I will focus on the pyrochlore compounds which are predicted to host exotic topological states such as magnetic Weyl semimetals. I will discuss how we synthesized the bulk crystals and thin films, followed by a more detailed discussion of their unusual magnetic and transport properties arising from the competition and interplay of SOC and electron interactions. For the layered metal chalcogenides, I will discuss the controlled growth of two-dimensional nanoplates and thin films by chemical vapor deposition and the engineering of their physical properties by tuning the stoichiometry, thickness and strain.
Bio: Shixiong Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Indiana University, Bloomington. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and his Ph.D. also in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2007. From 2008 – 2012, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Materials Science &Engineering at Northwestern University and then a Director's Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His research focuses on rational design, controlled synthesis, coherent measurement and engineering of novel nanostructured materials including correlated metal oxide and chalcogenide thin films and nanowires.
