Abstract: Materials Engineering–atomic doping, modification, functionalization, and their studies at the atomic, micro, and macro levels has led to substantial transformations through the creation of materials with unique properties and functional features which enabled innovations at numerous fields such as catalysis, sensors, energy storage, electronics, etc. Especially the latest advancement in materials science and nanotechnology offer significant new opportunities for the development of technologically essential materials by exploiting renewable resources. In this talk, I will discuss three different sections: First, I will discuss the possibility of synthesizing various multifunctional nanomaterials such as porous carbons, Quantum dots, nanoparticles using renewable resources, and their properties and applications. In the second part, I will discuss the methods of functionalization and doping of various two-dimensional materials, their chemistries, properties, and their possible applications in fields related to catalysis, electronics, and oil-gas. In the third part, I will highlight the role of polymer and nanoparticles in the development of sustainable cement architectures - the influence of the functional groups in the polymer and the cement and their impact on thermo-mechanical properties will be discussed.
Bio: Dr. Meiyazhagan is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Materials Science & NanoEngineering at Rice University. His current research interest is focused on the development of value-added materials for oil-gas applications and he has broad interest in areas which includes (1) wet chemical synthesis and functionalization of two-dimensional materials, (2) 3-D printing of cement structures, polymers, (3) synthesis of porous carbons, two-dimensional polymers, covalent organic frameworks and (4) development of advanced bio, nanocomposites. He is a recipient of competitive awards including Fulbright and RSC commonwealth grants. His research work has been published and presented in 27 journal papers and 16 conference presentations. Dr. Meiyazhagan holds a Ph.D. degree in chemistry/Materials Science from CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute and B.S and M.S. degree in chemistry from Bharathidasan university.
